A dripping faucet is more than an annoyance. A single drip per second can waste over 3,000 gallons of water a year. Fortunately, most leaks are simple to fix with basic tools.
Tools You Will Need
- Adjustable wrench
- Screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips)
- Replacement washers, O-rings, or cartridge
- Plumber’s grease
Step 1: Shut Off the Water
Turn off the shutoff valves under the sink. Open the faucet to drain any remaining water, and plug the drain so small parts do not fall in.
Step 2: Remove the Handle
Pry off the decorative cap, unscrew the handle, and set the parts aside in the order you removed them.
Step 3: Inspect the Internal Parts
Compression faucets usually need a new rubber washer. Cartridge, ball, and ceramic-disc faucets typically need a new cartridge or seals. Check for worn O-rings and corroded valve seats.
Step 4: Replace the Worn Components
Take the old part to a hardware store to find an exact match. Apply a thin layer of plumber’s grease to the new parts before installing them.
Step 5: Reassemble and Test
Put everything back together, turn the water on slowly, and check for leaks.
If the faucet still drips or the pipes are corroded, it may be time to call a plumber or replace the fixture entirely.
